With temperatures falling and seemingly endless rain in the Northeast, it's the perfect time to cozy up for fall. “Today” contributor Charla Krupp, executive editor of Shop Etc. magazine, talks about a few items to help you stay comfortable in the cold.
It's nesting time, which means time to snuggle up in comfortable loungewear. The November issue of Shop Etc has done the work for you by rouding up the best robes to buy for you, for him, and for the littlest ones. Here are some insider shopping tips:
- One size does not fit all anymore — the newest robes are tailored to hug you just right and are actually flattering. The best robes now follow fashion, so expect nothing less than chic patterns, like French toile; luxurious fabrics, like cashmere and crushed velvet; and of-the-moment colors, like teal.
- Major brands such as Kashwere, Natori, Tommy Hilfiger and even Target use fabrics that feel as soft as cashmere — at one third of the price.
The chic robe and matching toile pajamas
Cozy never was so chic! BedHeads are the PJs of choice among the Hollywood crowd: Jennifer Anniston wore them on “Friends,” Teri Hatcher wears them in “Desperate Housewives,” Diane Lane in “Must Love Dogs.” I can personally vouch for the BedHead flannels because I have a set in red toile, but black toile is so much chicer this season now that black is back.
I take my BedHead robe with me whenever I travel because it packs like a dream and is conservative enough to wear when you come downstairs in the morning for coffee at your in-laws' house. BedHead Flannel Robe is $136 on bedheadpjs.com and the Hipster Flannel PJ’s are usually $112 at boutiques. This super soft, double-napped, 100 percent cotton flannel only gets softer when you toss it into the washing machine.
Robes come in 2 sizes S/M [fits sizes 4-8]; M/L [fits sizes 10-14]), $136 at bedheadpjs.com.
PS Genevad
Wouldn't you love to get your feet in these? This is the wackiest pillow idea — a slipper pillow with snug built-in booties. Do you believe it's only $10?
IKEA stores, $10, 800-434-4532.
Best robe for petites
If you are petite like I am, you know what a challenge it is to find a robe that is not swimming on you. Not this one. Natori's Josie Bon Bon Robe features a shorter length, also known as a spa robe, and is made of a ligthweight terry that won’t weigh you down. This one has pretty pink stitching detail, is machine-washable and, at $45, is a brilliant buy! Bloomingdale's, 212-705-2000. $45 (sizes XS-L).
Vail Pom-Pom
Don’t you love the feel of shearling on your feet? Vail Pom-Poms are made of faux shearling. $85 (sizes 6 -10), patriciagreen.com.
Holiday cocoa collection and mug
Curl up by the fire or give as a gift. Hot chocolate becomes even more indulgent when the chocolate is from Godiva! In three yummy flavors — milk chocolate, dark chocolate and chocolate chai. Pair it with a jumbo French mug from Kiss That Frog, a ladylike scalloped edge in sturdy ceramic.
$20 for 3 flavors. 800-946-3482 or godiva.com. For the Manon jumbo mug in yellow, $16.50, Posh, IL, 312-280-1602, or poshchicago.com.
Kashwere guy and baby robe
Kashwere is a clever play on cashmere — it's a man-made fabric that duplicates the feel of cashmere but is machine washable, dryable and affordable. This is a unisex robe that also comes in kid sizes and is available in nine colors, including navy, which is huge this spring.
In crème, straw, camel, pink, iris, charcoal, chocolate, black or white, $145 in sizes P-XL, $155 for XXL; Kashwere.com.
Baby Spa Robe
Here's a great baby gift for just $25. This cute-as-can-be robe is terry on the outside and fleece on the inside, to pamper baby's delicate skin. Modeled after the robes you find in five-star spas and hotels, it comes in pink or blue, can be personalized and is made of machine-washable polyester, for those inevitable messes.
Robes in sizes 6-12 months or 12-18 months; $25, Red Envelope, 877-733-3683, or redenvelope.com.
Sigikid Helmut the Stuffed Dragon
This is the softest dragon you've ever carried around.
Zebra Hall, $34, 800-834-9165, or zebrahall.com.
Dorchester Robe
Velvet is the number one fashion trend of the fall, so why not a robe in crushed velvet? Ties at the side for a flattering fit.
$98; sizes S - XL; 800-309-2500 or anthropologie.com.
