September 5, 1975
Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme is arrested in Sacramento for the attempted assassination of President Gerald Ford—the first of two attempts on Ford's life in a 19-day span. Fromme, a "Manson Family" cult member told authorities she wanted to impress Manson (by that time five years into a life sentence) with her commitment to saving California 's Redwood trees. The gun was half-loaded but the firing chamber was empty, leading some to conclude Fromme was either not serious or had second thoughts about killing Ford. As she was arrested she told news cameras that she never fired. Fromme was not known to have any particular political views but sought publicity. She was a drifter and drug addict when Manson befriended her on a Los Angeles beach. She soon bought into his diabolical philosophy and became a member of his crazed family. After a bizarre trial in which she represented herself (and threw an apple at the prosecuting attorney's head), Fromme was sentenced to life in prison. She escaped in 1987 in an attempt to find Manson, but was arrested after a two-day manhunt.
