David Lloyd, TV sitcom writer, dies Nov. 13: David Lloyd, who wrote for "Cheers," "Taxi," "Frasier," and "Lou Grant" among others, died Tuesday. He was 75. NBC's Brian Williams reports. |
If the Oscars are Marcia Brady — great-looking, always with the right guy, favorite of Mom and Dad — then the Emmys are Jan. Yeah, she’s liked too, but not with the vigor of her older sister. She has to fight for recognition and stage a big, fat hissyfit in order to make her presence felt.
The Emmys will never be the Oscars but that’s OK. While the elite can have their “Sideways,” we’ll take “Lost.” If Jack, Kate, and Sayid can survive a plane crash and take on the mysteries of the island, surely they could drink Paul Giamatti and Thomas Haden Church under the table.
Here's one critic's take on who will win and who should win.
Drama series
Nominees: “Deadwood,” “Lost,” “Six Feet Under,” “24” and “The West Wing”
Who will win: “Lost.” With “Desperate Housewives” sure to dominate in the comedy category, it just feels like ABC’s year. It’s not the best show of these five but it probably has more buzz than all of them combined.

Who should win: “Deadwood.” While “Sopranos” gets all the headlines when it comes to the great HBO series, Tony and the gang play second fiddle to creator David Milch’s western masterpiece.
Comedy series
Nominees: “Arrested Development,” “Desperate Housewives,” “Everybody Loves Raymond,” “Scrubs” and “Will & Grace”
Who will win: “Desperate Housewives.” How ridiculous would the TV Academy look if they bestowed this to anyone else? Voters were perceived as outdated when giving awards to actors like David Hyde Pierce three years past his prime. If a show like “Will & Grace” wins against “Housewives,” the Emmy will have lost all credibility. Forever.
Who should win: “Desperate Housewives.” OK, it’s not really a comedy but it was a game-changer. Not only for ABC but for broadcast in general, slowing down the tide of viewers moving over to cable. “Housewives” redefined appointment television, which counts for a lot these days.
Made-for-TV movie
Nominees: “Lackawanna Blues,” “The Life and Death of Peter Sellers,” “The Office Special,” “Warm Springs” and “The Wool Cap”
Who will win: “The Wool Cap.” In a very tight race, the three HBO flicks split the vote and knock each other off. Plus, “Cap” star William H. Macy is a favorite with voters, having won a few years back for another heartwarming (read: schmaltzy) story, “Door to Door.”
Who should win: “Warm Springs.” The private life of FDR and wife Eleanor was fascinating stuff that was relatively untold before now. Makes one realize that there’d be no way a handicapped president — many Americans didn’t even know Roosevelt was bound to a wheelchair — could be elected today, given the intense media coverage of a campaign.
