The Deal
Tired of staying in bland hotel rooms? Add a twist to your next holiday and book a leafy overnight at a gorgeous tree-house hotel. You can really branch out at our very favorite arboreal dwellings and get a bird-eye's view of Brazil's Amazon rainforest, Washington State's Mt. Rainer National Park, Turkey's Mediterranean coast, and even Costa Rica, where you'll awaken to howler monkeys! Rates start as low as $18/night – and most have en-suite bath – and go up to $250, for all-out luxury (really!) in a 200-year-old redwood tree.
Overnight atop an ancient redwood tree in Washington for $250 per night
Prefer an intimate tree retreat? We suggest Cedar Creek Treehouse near Washington’s Mount Rainer National Park. Here, the adventure starts with a stroll down an 80-ft suspension footbridge through a rainforest of cedars, sword ferns, and evergreens. Next, guests climb up the five-floor stairwell to their arboreal hideout, perched at 50 feet atop a 200-year-old redwood tree. This single unit features a sleeping loft with skylights, an en-suite bathroom, a fully equipped kitchen with a dining area, plus an observation room with dazzling mountain vistas. The nightly rate of $250, based on double occupancy, includes a one-hour guided tour of the recently added spiral Stairway to Heaven, the Rainbow Bridge, and Tree-house Observatory. According to The Los Angeles Times, this tree-top heaven "excites the imagination!" And it’s really worth the splurge!
Tree-house stay in Costa Rica’s tropical forest for only $120 per night
Why not add some beach time to your tree-house stay, and sprinkle it with a little jungle vibe? You can do exactly that at the fabulous Costa Rica Tree House on the southern Caribbean coast of Costa Rica. In a lush tropical forest, steel bridges connect the bi-level tree house complete with two rooms (sleeping up to 6 people), a private bathroom and kitchen, and a shower built around a giant Sangrillo tree. On the ground, the botanic garden features 50 different palm trees and a colorful range of exotic birds. At this verdant paradise, you won’t need an alarm clock. Instead, wake up to howler monkeys’ morning call, and pay just $120/night for this wild experience. Or save by staying a whole week for only $720!
Two days high up in Amazonian jungle canopy for $280 per person
For a luxury arboreal extravaganza smack in the middle of the Amazon, head to Brazil’s Ariau Amazon Towers Hotel, described by Condé Nast Traveler as, "Imagine a hotel built among Amazon treetops: catwalks 70 feet up leading from a great circular dining room of polished tropical woods, a bar like an eagle's nest, a honeymoon suite built 110 feet up a mahogany tree, and friendly monkeys, macaws, sloths, and parrots scampering, fluttering, and dangling all over the place." $280 per person gets you a two-day package that includes round-trip boat transfer from the jungle town of Manaus to the lodge; a canoe excursion to a native village; two lunches, and one breakfast; a jungle trek; and a sunrise tour.
Turkish tree-house delight on the Mediterranean Coast for $18 per night
In the scenic Olympos Valley on the Mediterranean coast of Turkey, Kadir’s Tree Houses offers arboreal stays in its 40 atmospheric tree houses reminiscent of a traditional Turkish village. The amenities are basic, with shared bathroom facilities, but it’s all perfectly comfy, and adventurous to boot. The hotel’s travel agency can organize anything from abseiling and scuba-diving to jeep safaris and paragliding. Plus a night here is an absolute bargain! Rates start at $18 per person, based on two people sharing, and include daily breakfast and dinner at the on-premise restaurant.
Tree-top wonderland in Oregon, starting at just $100 per night
Stretching over 36 private acres in the southwestern corner of Oregon, the Out’n’About Tree Resort is the place to go to learn to build your own tree house – while staying in one. Guests can choose between 18 arboreal units – from deluxe suites to tall ‘treezebos’ (read: tree gazebo) and cozy ‘treepees’ (teepee in the trees). Seven swinging bridges, numerous platforms, five swings, 20 flights of stairs and four ladders ingeniously link these unique ‘hotel rooms’. On the ground is a fresh-water swimming pool, a performance stage and a campfire site. At the on-premise Treehouse Institute, tree-dwellers can take a course in tree-house design and construction, rope-climbing, horse back riding, rafting and crafts like tile mosaic, tie-die, and whittling. This delightful property is geared to families, but anyone young at heart will enjoy the tree-top fun.
Nightly rates start at $100 for a comfy tree abode with shared bath facilities in the main house; for an upscale tree stay, book the Treeroom Schoolhouse Suite for $180 (based on four-person occupancy) with a separate master bedroom and an antique claw-foot tub in the private bathroom. Prices include full breakfast daily, as well as bedding and towels. Note that there’s a three-night minimum stay in August; in September, you must stay at least two nights.
