Tankinis are stylish and flattering.

Talk talk

The tankini continues as a stylish option for swim and sun. A colored or patterned top with a solid bottom will keep the focus above your waist instead of below. (Do the reverse if you are top-heavy).  For an athletic look, go for a true tank style with reinforced, double straps. A halter neckline as shown here (Miraclesuit, $124 at Nordstrom.com) is not only trendy, but it also helps minimize broad shoulders and supports the bust.

Trend Tip:
Many women love tankinis because they are two-pieces yet offer the coverage of a one-piece. They are also versatile — many companies sell top and bottom pieces separately so you can mix and match to create different looks.

For those who dare to bare...

Peep show

There’s an emphasis this season on feminine and retro looks, so if you’re comfortable in a bikini, look for a ruffle trimmed, skirt-inspired style, as seen here from Ralph Lauren Blue Label ($74.20 at SaksFifthAvenue.com). You’ll find ruffled wraps on many one-piece suits as well. To give the illusion of a larger bustline, look for a suit with a ruffled top.

Trend Tip:
You can get the same look in a flash by tying one of the season’s ruffled pareos around your waist — it’s instant coverage with a glamorous twist. With lengths ranging from short to the knees, you can cover or bare as much as you dare.

Rings are oh-so trendy.

Rings and things

Searching for the latest styles?  Then choose a suit with rings and things! Ring details are showing up everywhere — on shoulder straps, as bust details and at the sides of bikini bottoms. They add an updated touch to the simplest of suits, as shown here (from INC, $56.99 at Macys.com), or they can make an all-out fashion statement in wood or metal.

Trend Tip:
Slimming tips: A monochromatic suit is a great choice, and a high-cut bottom makes legs look longer. To minimize a larger bust, opt for a square neckline.

Cut-outs are back.

Curves ahead

If you've got the body, go for the curvaceous look of the monochromatic one-piece with strategically placed cut-outs — a hot trend no matter how you slice it. This style allows you to show what you want, where you want — highlight a shapely waist, a sexy back or some serious décolleté. We love it in white as shown here (from Speedo, $112 at VictoriasSecret.com), but you will find cut-out suits in every color and print under the sun.

Trend Tip:
When wearing a suit with cut-outs, you'll  need to even up your tan with a self-tanning lotion, and then slather on the sunblock. If that's too problematic, choose a one-piece strapless style.

Rrrrr! Animal prints are in.

Cover it up

Where would we be without our beach cover-ups? This season they are oh-so-hot, so cover away whether you choose a classic pareo (see above), a sophisticated caftan or a trendy tunic. The breezy tunic in a boho or animal print shown here ($79 at Bloomingdales.com) is a runway-inspired and guaranteed to add a glam touch to your beach ensemble. Best of all, you can wear it out on the street or to dinner as well!

Trend Tip:
Baggier is not better. If you like the idea of a tunic or caftan, keep them loose-fitting but not oversized.  Cover-ups that are too big actually make you look bigger.
