Newspaper readers moving online

1 in 5 Web users get news from Internet, study finds

NEW YORK - One in five Web users who rely on newspapers for news primarily go to their online editions rather than read articles in print, a new study finds.

The majority, 72 percent, still primarily use the print editions, while 7 percent split their time evenly, according to a survey released Thursday by Nielsen/NetRatings.

“It’s great news for the online entities,” said Gerry Davidson, senior media analyst with Nielsen/Net Ratings. “It shows people are going to those sites and they are responding.”

Men are more likely to read news primarily online.

The survey excluded people who got their news from other sources such as broadcast and people without Internet access.

The random survey of 9,000 individuals was conducted from January through March. It has a margin of sampling error of 1 percentage point.
