WilliamsSonoma.com Cedar planks will add an elegant touch to Dad's cooking. |
Bar & grill
What dad doesn’t love ruling over the grill? For a new take on grilling, think about a device designed for more than burgers and steaks, such as a panini press. Or expand his recipe repertoire with a cool tool, such as a special grilling basket for corn on the cob or shrimp and veggies ($24 at Williams-Sonoma) or a flavor-infusing cedar grill plank. If he’s a serious cook, go for a selection of grilling rubs and marinades.
Trend Tip:
Bar accessories are also a great gift for the “bar & grill” guy. Beer mugs, coasters, ice buckets, flasks and bar tools are all A+ choices.
Sports report
If he’s the sporting type but you don’t want to be responsible for taking him off to the ER on Sunday night, introduce the idea of a low-impact, non-contact sporting option. Ideas include an in-office or outdoor putting green (you can find interactive versions for around $60), a hitting net or mat to help him practice his golf swing, a dartboard, a handheld billiards game or a cool new pool cue.
Trend Tip:
What’s hot? Bocce ball is all the rage in New York City with competitive leagues of all ages facing off in the city’s parks. But you don’t have to be in the Big Apple, you can play bocce anywhere — on beaches, in your backyard. The complete kit will run you less than $40 at a sporting goods store
Lights, camera, action
Whether dad’s a couch potato or you need to encourage him to sit down and relax, one of this season’s new DVDs should do the trick. His favorite movie is a no-brainer, but also think about seasonal compilations of a great TV or cable series, or the first season of a show he’s always meant to watch. Hot off the presses are “The Sopranos,” “Seinfeld,” “The West Wing” and “World Poker Tour.” Prices vary … shop around!
Trend Tip:
Vintage comedy shows and movies are making a comeback. Reintroduce Dad to the delights of “The Dick Cavett Show,” “Monty Python” or “The Pink Panther” — all wonderful boxed set gifts available at your local video store.
Car and driver![]()
Put dad in the driver’s seat with auto-themed gifts. It could be as simple as the gift of a monthly car wash and cleaning. Or go digital with the gift of an air purifier for the car, a talking tire gauge or a key ring that beeps at the click of a button (no more lost keys!). You can find gifts like these at Brookstone (all under $50), in department stores or even at an auto shop.
Trend Tip:
If dad’s a NASCAR fan, then the DVD version of “Nascar 3D: The Imax Experience” is on the must-have list. It uses cutting-edge film-making techniques to take viewers behind the scenes at racetracks all around the country (under $20).
Gadget guy
If he’s a gadget guy, then your problem may be having too many choices! Here’s some fun ideas: a handheld poker game or an electronic bartender recipe guide (both under $20 at Radio Shack); head on over to Sears for a great selection of iPod accessories (most are under $40); or pop into one of those ubiquitous wireless stores and get dad a gadget that lets him talk on the cell phone and drive/walk/grill at the same time.
Trend Tip:
Want to go all out? The hot gadget to get right now is a portable XM satellite radio that works inside the car and out. Delphi’s new MyFi XM2GO is getting rave reviews — 130 channels, plus it’s designed to work as both a portable player and a plug-and-play receiver (list price $299.99, but promotions abound). We want one, too!
