9/11 missed opportunities — The line between analysis and scape goating is a very fine one, and in our history, we have stepped over it, and back again, repeatedly. In the 1,368 days since 9/11 we have struggled to keep the analysis from degenerating into the scape goating… And tonight we have more with which to struggle. The report of the Inspector General of the Justice Department found that the FBI missed multiple chances to catch two of the 9/11 hijackers before the attack — at least once with the negative help of the CIA.

Arlene — This time tomorrow, Tropical Storm Arlene could be a hurricane. After the hurricane swarm last summer, this is the first storm out of the box this spring and it looks all too familiar to the folks in the gulf. Read Citizen Journalist eye-witness reports for details.

Breaking curses — Today, for the first time since 1918, the Boston Red Sox and the Chicago Cubs, are playing a ballgame that counts. They used to be baseball's twin versions of the Flying Dutchmen — two teams that between them hadn't won a World Series in 180 years. Then the Red Sox had to go and win last year. Needless to say, Cubs fans are not happy.

Jackson trial — A full day of deliberations wrapped today up in the Jackson trial. This means jurors have only thought about it for a net total of 28 hours and 30 minutes. There’s no verdict, as you guessed. The jury went home for the weekend at 2:23, Santa Maria time. Here's hoping none of them fell for an e-mail claiming to have details about a Jackson suicide attempt. It was in fact a cover for a computer virus. And this might be a cover for something. The prosecution is supposedly so confident of the outcome that several reporters say the state's attorneys went out for celebratory dinner and drinks Wednesday night.

Presidential pooches — One of our principles here — and there aren't that many — is that it doesn't have to be earth shattering, to be news. We are stretching that to the limit tonight. As the former first lady Bess Truman once said, "if you want a friend in Washington, get a dog." Al Roker of The Today Show has an exclusive interview tonight, about their pets, with two people who have taken that advice: the current President and First Lady.
