Tractor-trailer plows into bus carrying kids

BOCA RATON, Fla. - A tractor-trailer collided with a bus taking 25 children of migrant workers to an amusement arcade Friday, seriously injuring five kids and one adult, authorities said.

The more seriously hurt youngsters suffered broken bones and head injuries, said Fire-Rescue Deputy Chief Steve Delai.

One young boy and a 30-year-old chaperone were in intensive care at Delray Medical Center late Friday, officials said. Two other children were in stable condition, while conditions for the other two seriously injured children were not immediately available.

The 20 other children were taken to the hospital for treatment of cuts and bruises.

Two other adults — workers for the Migrant Association of South Florida, which was using the bus — also suffered minor injuries. The drivers of the bus and tractor-trailer were not hurt.

Cause of crash unknown
“It appears that the bus was in the center lane and the tractor-trailer was in the right lane. For some reason the bus got into the path of the tractor-trailer,” Florida Highway Patrol Lt. Pat Santangelo told WPTV.

The highway patrol is investigating. No charges were immediately filed.

The children, ages 6 to 14, were on their way to an arcade from a Boynton Beach day camp for migrant workers’ children, authorities said.

Association spokeswoman Maria Puente said the children were being cared for as part of a summer program while their parents worked.
