OKLAHOMA CITY - A baby girl who weighed 11 ounces at birth has died, a little more than three days after being delivered three months premature.
Kalea Lyn Allen Richardson, who died late Friday, had been kept under a humidification tent in the neonatal intensive care unit at Mercy Health Center.
“She was my angel, and she was a fighter,” said her mother, Deidra Allen. “We fought hard for her, and she made it until she couldn’t make it anymore.”
Kalea was delivered by Caesarean section Tuesday after an ultrasound raised concerns that she might die in the womb, doctors said.
Her legs were no longer than an adult’s pinkie and her feet were about the size of an adult’s fingernail. A breathing tube smaller than a piece of spaghetti pumped air into her lungs.
The baby who is believed to be the smallest ever to survive was born in September near Chicago. Rumaisa Rahman, who weighed 8.6 ounces at birth, was released from the hospital in February. Her twin sister, who weighed 1 pound, 4 ounces, also survived.
