LAS VEGAS - Las Vegas Sands Corp., owner of the Venetian Casino Resort in Las Vegas, has partnered with English football club Manchester United to build a resort and casino near the team's Old Trafford stadium.

Financial terms weren't disclosed.

The company said the proposal includes plans for a five-star luxury hotel, restaurants, health club, sports bar and a casino. The plans are conditional upon the project receiving a license to include a casino as part of the complex.

Manchester United has applied to build the new casino complex. The club has the support of its local Trafford Council and together with Las Vegas Sands has made an initial bid for a license for a regional-scale casino in the Trafford area.

“The project has the potential to create up to 2,000 new jobs,” said Rodney Brody, U.K. representative for Las Vegas Sands.

Under Britain’s new Gambling Act of 2005, a U.K. government-appointed advisory panel will look at applications under which the first regional casino and any subsequent projects are awarded.

The Associated Press and Reuters contributed to this report.
