Military aid and assistance organizations

With so much focus on American troops serving at home and abroad, MSNBC.com has compiled a list of organizations that aid members of the military and their families, and give other Americans the opportunity to show their support

For members of the military and their families

Military Family Support Centers: Each branch of the military has several support centers that serve military members and their families.  These organizations include community services for families at post, family support in navigating through bureaucratic channels, and aid to assist with stressful situations when a loved one is deployed.  Their Web site contains more than 20 links to different organizations in each branch of the military, and Department of Defense programs for all military families.

The Department of Veteran’s Affairs Compensation and Pension Benefits Service helps veterans and their families determine what compensation they are entitled to, and how to obtain it. The VA also sponsors an outreach site for families of veterans, which discusses benefits for spouses, parents, and children of veterans. The veterans’ life insurance program alerts soldiers and their families to the policy options available.

The Disabled Soldier Support System provides a network of resources for injured members of the military and their families.

American Legion Temporary Financial Assistance Program offers grants and financial support to families of veterans when they have no other available resources.

American Legion Family Support Network works at local or “post” levels to help families of personnel involved in Operation Iraqi Freedom.

The Red Cross 
offers assistance to military members on active duty and their families, as well as veterans.

The National Military Family Association offers a camp to help children deal with deployment related stress, and also provides links to help families determine to which benefits they are entitled.

Military.com is an “online community” with articles, links, job listings and other information for members of the military, veterans and their families.

Iraq War Veterans provides support for veterans of the Iraq war and their families. The Web site also has links to other assistance and support organizations.

Organizations for others who would like to offer support

Operation Gratitude  sends care packages with food, toiletries, necessities, entertainment items and personal letters of appreciation to American troops abroad.

America Supports You is a nationwide program developed by the Department of Defense that helps people send messages of support to members of the military at home and abroad. The site also has a comprehensive list of aid organizations that accept donations and aid military members and their families.

Armed Forces Relief Trust is a non-profit fund created by the National Association of Broadcasters and the military aid societies to collect and hand out donations and loans in support of the troops and their families in need. The fund accepts private donations.

The Coalition to Salute America’s Heroes is a organization, created to provide an easy and meaningful way for individuals, corporations and others to help our severely wounded and disabled veterans and their families rebuild their lives.

Operation Truth is a non-profit, non-partisan veterans' organization that seeks to amplify the soldiers' voice in the American public dialogue.

Global War on Terrorism Veterans In Need is organiztion that honors and ensures quality support to severely injured GWT veterans of Pensacola Bay Area and raise community awareness by publicly embracing returning veterans.

National Veterans Foundation is a National Non-profit Organization located in Los Angeles, California. The National Veterans Foundation has been helping all Veterans, their families, & their children unconditionally for over the past 18 years. Our Mission at the National Veterans Foundation is to continue the process of rehabilitating and integrating American Veterans into productive roles in society and to facilitate, maintain, and operate the Nation’s only toll-free crisis management, referral and information hotline for Veterans and their families.
