MOUNT AIRY, N.C. - Two second-graders were charged after one of the boys brought a .22-caliber pistol to school and let the other boy handle it, authorities said.
The boy who brought the gun to Franklin Elementary School was showing it to the other boy when another student in their class saw them and told the teacher. The teacher then took the unloaded gun, school officials said.
The boys were charged with felony possession of a firearm on school property. They also were suspended from school for 10 days.
Investigators with the Surry County Sheriff’s Department were not sure who owns the gun, Detective Rita Nichols said. The boys’ parents were cooperating with authorities.
