LOS ANGELES - Cartoon Network has ordered 15 half-hour episodes of “Boondocks,” a series based on the popular newspaper comic strip.

Like the strip, the series will revolve around the adventures of two boys, Riley and Huey, who experience a culture clash when they move from inner-city Chicago to the suburbs to live with their grandfather.

“The goal is to make it as true to what the strip is as possible while adding the different layers that you can’t do in a strip,” said “Boondocks” creator Aaron McGruder. “Once I started writing (the scripts), I found it very liberating to have so much space to work in. You can do a lot more in 22 minutes than you can in three panels.”

The network aims to premiere the show next fall in its successful “Adult Swim” late-night block. McGruder will executive produce with Reggie Hudlin.

“Boondocks” has had a fast rise in popularity since its 1999 debut and now appears in more than 200 newspapers. The strip is known for its provocative take on politics and America’s class and racial divides.

The TV adaptation of “Boondocks” was originally developed by Sony Pictures Television as a pilot for Fox Broadcasting Co. Cartoon Network swooped in once Fox’s option to give it a series order lapsed this year.
