Since the dawn of time men and women have been at each other's throats about one subject or another. He says this. She says that. In part two of a special “Today” series called "Gender Wars" we tackle the tasty topic of food. How do men and women differ when they eating on the go? To find out more, the “Today” show asked Jorge Cruise, columnist for Prevention Magazine and author of "8 Minutes in the Morning," and Kathleen Daelemans, weight loss consultant and author of "Getting Thin and Loving Food," to talk about how men and women can slim down their dining-out meals. Here are some of their thoughts:
Denny's
Men
The Fiesta Scramble
Includes two scrambled eggs combined with seasoned ground beef, topped with shredded cheddar cheese and salsa. It is served with two sausage links and two strips of bacon. Additional side items include hash browns and three pancakes.
Eat out tips: Request egg beaters and choose ground beef, sausage or bacon, but not all three. Ask for a side of dry whole-wheat toast instead of the hash browns or pancakes.
Make at home tips: Use egg whites or egg beaters and low-fat Italian chicken sausage. Portion control the sausage and cheese and serve it with fresh salsa that contains no oil or sugar.
Women
Veggie-Cheese Omelet
Filled with sautéed onions, green peppers, mushrooms and diced tomatoes folded in with shredded cheddar cheese. It is served with bread choice.
Eat out tips: Request that it be made with egg beaters, but hold the onions. The onions are probably sautéed in too much oil. You should request microwave veggies instead of sautéing them and ask for the cheese on the side
Make at home tips: Same as above.
Mimi's Cafe
Men
Mimi's Pot Roast
A 10 oz. USDA choice chuck roast braised slowly with carrots, celery and onions.
Eat out tips: Order grilled steak if you're in the mood for meat – who knows what's in this pot roast. Order a baked potato with no butter, fat free sour cream and a side of broccoli and or a big salad.
Women
Bleu Cheese and Walnut Salad
Baby spring greens tossed with bleu cheese, dried cranberries, walnuts, bacon, tomatoes and balsamic vinaigrette dressing.
Eat out tips: Stay in control of the calories you consume. Ask for the blue cheese, walnuts, bacon and dressing to be on the side. Consider bringing your own dressings.
Make at home tips: Use several kinds of lettuces, portion control the cheese, walnuts and bacon. Slim down the dressing.
Applebee’s
Men
House Sirloin Steak
A 9 oz. sirloin grilled and served with country potatoes, seasonal vegetables and garlic toast.
Eat out tips: Fill up on the good stuff. Order a house salad with the dressing on the side, a double side of steamed veggies and choose either the bread or the potato. Go for the potato – no fixings. Put your veggies on the potato if you want with a little sour cream or ask for a side of grated Parmesan cheese. When the steak arrives, before you take your first bit, ask that half of it be wrapped to go.
Women
Oriental Chicken Salad
Crisp Asian greens topped with golden fried chicken, toasted almonds, crispy noodles, and tossed with Oriental vinaigrette and sliced scallions.
Eat out tips: Ask that the chicken be grilled. Order everything on the side.
