Events in Iraq hit close to home for Ann Curry
As fighting heats up in Iraq, 'Today's' Ann Curry shares the story of her family's devastating loss more than 10 years ago and how she wants to give a greater voice to the young men on the front lines
Watching Iraq spiral out of control, I can't help but be haunted by a terrible day more than 10 years ago, when I answered a knock at the front door to see a man in a military uniform.
He introduced himself and did not waste time saying, "I am sorry to inform you that your brother Gordon Curry has died in the line of duty."
My chest still seizes, thinking of the pain of that news, and as I report now daily on the dying of Americans in Iraq, I shudder, knowing that knock at the door is coming for the families they leave behind.
My brother Gordon served as a medical technician in the Air Force, when he died in a vehicle accident while traveling to Wiesbaden Medical Center in Germany from his base Aviano, Italy.

His short life very much on my mind, I want to give the good young men on the front lines a greater voice in our news coverage. I wonder what we must now do to report their stories, especially if the fighting continues to grow?
