Frisbees and Footballs Carry $1,000 Fine on Los Angeles Beaches

If you're planning to head to a Los Angeles beach this summer, don't even think about flinging a Frisbee or tossing around a football.

This week the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors agreed to impose fines of up to $1,000 on anyone who throws a  Frisbee or  football on any beach in Los Angeles County.

The 37-page ordinance, passed Tuesday, outlines responsibilities for law enforcement and other agencies while also clarifying just which beach-goer activities could potentially disrupt or injure the public.

The updated rules now prohibit “any person to cast, toss, throw, kick or roll” any object other than a beach ball or volleyball “upon or over any beach” between  Memorial Day and  Labor Day . (The rules for ball-playing will be relaxed during the winter beach "off-season.") If you really want to throw a ball, there are a few exceptions to the rule: You may play in predesignated areas, obtain a special permit, or play water polo “in or over the Pacific Ocean”.

Officials warned that any activities that could potentially harm “any person or property on or near the beach” should not be allowed during the peak summer season. Which brings up another fineable offense: holes. The new ordinance also prohibits beach bums from digging any hole in the sand deeper than 18 inches, except where permission is previous granted for film and TV production services only.
