Guards fired a warning shot and used pepper spray to break up the fight among about 150 inmates at California State Prison, Sacramento in Folsom, which is about 20 miles east of the state capital.

Prison officials say the conditions of the two inmates who were stabbed were not immediately known. Several other inmates were taken to outside hospitals, while others were being treated at the prison for minor injuries.

No guards or other staff members were hurt during the fight, which began about 10:30 a.m. Friday.

The prison houses about 3,000 inmates and stopped most inmate movements while the fight and its cause are being investigated.
