Orrico says pop stars should set better example for young girls

Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera promote "degrading" sexuality that makes them bad role models for young girls, U.S. chart-topping Christian singer Stacie Orrico said Saturday.

The fresh-faced pop singer from Nashville, Tenn., told reporters in Singapore, where she was to perform at the MTV Asia Awards later Saturday, that it worries her to see girls emulating Spears and Aguilera.

"The reason that I don't dress trashy is that I'm trying to set an example for little girls," Orrico said. "From the time they're seven or eight years old, (girls) are being taught that the only thing that makes them special and beautiful is their sexuality, and I think that's wrong."

Orrico, wearing a loose, long-sleeved white shirt and jeans, said she doesn't approve of the revealing clothes sported by Spears and Aguilera.

"I don't think that's sexy, I think it's degrading," the bubbly 17-year-old said. "I think that (being) a truly sexy woman comes from being confident and being classy, respectable and mature."

Orrico, who's album "Stacie Orrico" made No. 5 on Billboard's Top Contemporary Christian Albums list this month, also weighed in on Janet Jackson's breast-baring incident at the Super Bowl, calling the stunt "unnecessary."

"I definitely don't think that she's a good example." Orrico said.

At a separate news conference, British boy band Blue accused the media of blowing the Jackson incident out of proportion but also called it "disgusting."

"You lot lap it up, that's why they do it, because you lot write about it and it makes front-page news in every bloody country," said Duncan James, one of Blue's four singers. "But then you're promoting it!"

Blue was also in Singapore to perform at the MTV Asia Awards. The group was nominated for Favorite Pop Act, and Orrico was nominated for Best Breakthrough Artist.
