>> reporter: good morning. about an hour ago nelson mandela 's motorcade went past us. he's arrived at home we are told. south africa 's vice president and the surgeon general said he's in good spirits, feeling good. that he was here at the hospital for routine tests. he's been surrounded by family including his current wife and former wife winnie mandela . it is believed he has an acute respiratory illness but the drugs have been successful. they also think it is a result of the tuberculosis he acquired when in prison. he served 27 years in prison, at times doing hard labor and solitary confinement. the vice president said today not to worry, that he's going to be okay. this is from the press conference earlier.
>> there is no need for anyone to panic. there is no reason for us to fear for his health. he is in good health. he should be with us to celebrate his 91st birthday in july.
>> reporter: mandela will be receiving home care . the police have cordoned off his neighborhood, not allowing anyone in. they want south africa 's first black president to recover in peace.
>> stephanie gosk, thank you. it's 7:19. here is meredith.
>> thank you.
