CHARLESTON, S.C. — A New York-bound Greyhound bus rear-ended a logging truck Tuesday evening on Interstate 95 near St. George, S.C., officials said. The bus driver and at least 18 passengers were injured.

The bus was carrying 21 passengers when it crashed into the truck shortly after 6 p.m. ET, officials said.

Northbound lanes of I-95 were closed for several hours as fire crews worked to free the bus driver, who was pinned by logs deeply in the bus, according to NBC station WCBD of Charleston.

The bus journey began in Orlando, Fla. The driver, with nearly 30 years experience, took over his portion of the route in Jacksonville, Fla., a Greyhound spokeswoman said.

Weather conditions kept medical helicopters grounded, so patients were evacuated with ground ambulances, officials said.

The driver, the most seriously injured, was taken to Medical University Hospital in Charleston. Most of the passengers, none of whom were seriously hurt, were transported to Colleton Medical Center in Walterboro; others were taken to Trident Regional Medical Center in North Charleston.

The logging truck driver was not injured, officials said.

No charges were filed. The accident remains under investigation, officials said.
