is following the latest developments from d.c. and we also have nbc news analyst and

profiler

on the phone. i understand that the
fbi
has now linked a single weapon to two of the shootings.

, that you were just looking at. that was two weeks ago and then a couple weeks after that a shooting at the pentagon and then after that a shooting at a
marine corps
recruiting station in
virginia
. now, in two of those cases the shooter fired at areas that were undergoing renovation, the part of the pentagon and the recruiting station were both closed and unoccupied and in all three of those cases the shots were fired in the very early morning hours when no one was there. so, it's apparent that whoever is firing these shots is not trying to kill people. now, we don't know if this latest incident, the shots fired at the
marine corps
mew zesome the same person or not. it would appear to be a bit of an outliar in the seps that it is the same target hit twice but that is a matter for the forensics to figure out and this is all coming as the
marine corps marathon
is getting ready to get under way in washington the annual race that will happen this year, again, and, of course, that's an additional security concern. but this is a mystery, chris. they don't really have a good lead of who's doing this. there's no good surveillance video from any of these incidents. there are no eyewitnesses that have seen vehicles. all of these shootings, though, happen for the sides of the buildings the targets right near big highways. it's apparent whoever is doing this is driving up, doing it and getting away quickly.

, no surveillance, no eyewitness and we don't know what the motive is. they don't seem to be aiming at people. as an

profiler, where do you start to look?

you try to consider motive and motive is across the board on this one. it could be a terrorist, although if it was a terrorist-type activity, one would think they would be targeting people. it appears as pete just said that there is an intentional attempt not to target to people. these targets are shot at night. these buildings are shot at night when the probability of anyone being in the buildings or any offices are very low. so, if we say, oh, it's probably not
al qaeda
. let's put terrorism aside, then you have to start thinking, is it an anti-war protester, is it someone who is just extremely emotionally challenged or is it just a foolish jerk who is just driving up and down and, chris, you know this may well be something similar, although, fortunately, we're not having people shot. as we all remember the d.c. sniper case. in that one we had one person driving a vehicle and one person shooting and because of the number of rounds that are being fired, it looks like that could be the case again.
