A pier on Manhattan's West Side caught on fire on Saturday, sending plumes of smoke billowing into the air above the Hudson River and the West Side Highway. The cause of the blaze was not immediately clear.

There were no reports of injuries from the three-alarm fire, the New York Fire Department told NBC News. One-hundred thirty-eight firefighters had been dispatched to the scene. Marine fire boats were also brought in to battle the fire from the river, officials said.

The blaze was at a city sanitation garage located on West 57th Street and 12th Avenue. It briefly halted traffic on the West Side Highway, WNBC reported.

The fire started shortly after 3 p.m. ET, and was mostly contained within an hour and a half. Divers were checking for structural damage under the pier, the Fire Department told NBC.

No evacuations were ordered.
