Lettuce recalled for possible E. coli

Fresh Express is voluntarily recalling certain Romaine lettuce salad products because they may be contaminated with E. coli.

The affected Romaine lettuce products have use-by dates of July 8, July 9, July 10, July 11 and July 12, and have an "S" in the product code, according to the Salinas, Calif. company. No other Fresh Express salads are included in the recall.

The salad products were distributed in California, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Kansas, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Wyoming, Washington and Nevada, according to a report by NBC affiliate KARK in Little Rock, Ark.

No illnesses have been reported in association with the recall. 

Consumers or retailers with any remaining expired product should not consume it, but rather discard it, the company said. Anyone with questions may call the Fresh Express Consumer Response Center at (800) 242-5472, Monday – Friday, 5 a.m. – 8 p.m., Pacific Time.

The recall was announced due to a random sample test conducted by the Food and Drug Administration which detected a positive result for the bacterium in one package of Fresh Express Hearts of Romaine salad.

It's the second recall by Fresh Express in two months. In May, the company recalled Romaine ready-to-eat salads due to a possible salmonella contamination.
