Transcript of: Anti-bacterial soap under FDA scrutiny
BRIAN WILLIAMS, anchor: Health news tonight , there are new safety questions about an ingredient found in a growing number of products found in many American homes. The FDA says it's taking a close look at an antibacterial chemical called triclosan. It's been used for years in the soap surgeons use to scrub up for surgery. Now it's in a lot of products, including antibacterial soaps, lipstick, toothpaste, kitchenware, clothes, even toys. Some studies suggest it might disrupt the body's hormonal system and may increase bacteria resistant to antibiotics. The industry says it's safe. The FDA hopes to have some clear answers next year.
