>>> good morning, everyone. today officials are announcing a new strategy on passenger screening based on lessons learned from the christmas day attempted bombing. nbc's pete williams has more.
>> reporter: tamron, administration officials say they're adding a new layer of security based on threat intelligence to decide who to subject to secondary screening for flights to the u.s. from overseas. the u.s. is doing away with the rule imposed just in january that automatically resulted in secondary screening for anyone flying here from 14 countries, mostly in the middle east and africa. instead, tsa will focus more on other indicators, including such obvious factors as people who have recently been in yemen or such traits as partial names, passport numbers or physical descriptions derived from the intelligence. now the terror watch list will still be used. in fact, the number of people on it has doubled. one senior official says the attempted christmas day bombing provided a needed jolt to the security system . tamr tamron?
>> nbc's pete williams , thank you.
>>> homeland security secretary janet napolitano
