One person was killed and at least three others were injured as tornadoes struck parts of Arkansas on Wednesday night.
Cleburne County Sheriff Marty Moss said Thursday there had been one fatality. He declined to identify the victim or provide more details, but the National Weather Service in Little Rock said the victim was a 79-year-old man, whose wife and grandson were injured when the twister struck their home near Pearson in northern Arkansas.
The Weather Service said major appliances of their house were blown more than 750 feet, and that other debris from the storm was found two miles away.
The National Weather Service also said another person suffered a leg injury in a tornado in Center Hill in northeast Arkansas.
Roughly 1,600 customers were without power Thursday morning while crews began surveying the destruction.
Emergency Management spokeswoman Renee Preslar told NBC News that at least nine homes were damaged in White County during Wednesday's storm. The only other county reporting damage was Saline County, which reported six to eight homes damaged in one location, and up to 13 in another, she said.
Oklahoma, northern Texas and other states had been on the watch Wednesday for new twisters after one on Monday night that destroyed five homes and damaged others. No one was injured.
'Baseball-sized hail'
NBC News also reported that "baseball-sized hail" fell south of Texarkana, Ark.
"Golf ball-sized hail" was reported in northeast Texas, southwest Missouri and northwest Louisiana, according to NBC News.
Forecasters have said moisture from the Gulf of Mexico, a wetter-than-usual winter and a jet stream racing over "Tornado Alley" could contribute to a rapid uptick in violent storms.
