SEOUL, South Korea — China's Xinhua News Agency says that North Korean leader Kim Jong Il has reiterated his country's promise to achieve a denuclearization of the Korean peninsula.

Xinhua says in a dispatch from Pyongyang that Kim reiterated his country's "persistent stance to realize the denuclearization" of the peninsula.

The one-sentence dispatch did not elaborate. It came hours after Kim met senior Chinese envoy Wang Jiarui in Pyongyang.

The North's official Korean Central News Agency reported that Wang conveyed to Kim a verbal message from Chinese President Hu Jintao and that the North Korean leader asked him to convey his regards to Hu.

KCNA said the two had a "cordial and friendly conversation" but didn't elaborate on what was discussed.
