Thanksgiving is just over a week away, but some charities are concerned that they might not be able to meet the needs of some local families.

Saint Vincent DePaul remained about 700 turkeys short of its goal Monday, and officials there said the economy had increased the demand for help while cutting into the amount of assistance offered.

"It is overwhelming, the number of people who need help this year, and the people that never, ever thought they would be in that condition," said Liz Carter, executive director. "People that were giving last year, and this year they are on the other side of the table and they are needing help."

The need for Thanksgiving meals is expected to increase by 50 percent from last year, which Carter said they were unable to meet.

"We've got 700 families we've got to figure out how to feed," Carter said. "We will take – you name it and we will take it, and we will be so grateful for it."

Nothing fills the empty pantries like money, she said, mainly because of the charity's buying power and deal-striking ability.

Donors can put together a complete Thanksgiving meal basket for a family of four for just $34.

"You know it's just a basket of food, but it's a lot, lot more for their families," Carter said.
