SACRAMENTO, Calif. - KCRA.com
A group of pit bulls rescued from a Midwest dog-fighting operation passed through Sacramento on Monday en route to foster families.
The dogs, including many puppies, were transferred in the parking lot of the city shelter on Front Street. The pets are on their way to Butte County and other locations in Northern California and Oregon.
"Dogs from dog-fighting situatons go through horrible conditions," said John Polis, representative of Utah-based Best Friends Animal Society. "They have a very difficult time being dogs. They are unsocialized, usually, and so when we get them, they have to learn how to be dogs and start all over again."
The dogs were recovered earlier this year near St. Louis, Mo.
Polis said the dogs will go to families that know how to handle them.
When asked if the dogs are safe to be sent into homes, he said how a dog acts depends on how it is treated.
"We believe that no dog is inherently dangerous," he said.
