The superintendent wanted to push through the vote Monday, but the board wants to gather more information from the community and possibly consider other school options.
Three new schools will open in the district in August 2010, but new zoning lines must be established.
According to the school board, the elementary schools will open with Kindergarten to fifth grade, maintain feeder patterns as much as possible and follow current grandfathering policies.
As part of the proposed plan, the new elementary school in the south part of the county will have an initial enrollment of 550 to 650 students.
New zoning lines for that school will result in the transfer of some students attending Heritage, Longview and Chapman’s Retreat elementary schools.
The new school in west Franklin will have 300 to 450 students its first year and will result in the rezoning of some Walnut Grove Elementary students and possibly some students currently zoned for Winstead Elementary.
The third new school being built in the district is a middle school and will house sixth- through eighth-grade students in the southern part of the county.
The board plans to follow current grandfathering policies and establish a new feeder pattern for the new high school, also in the southern part of the county.
Several meetings took place at the beginning of November to get public opinion on the issue.
Testimony of the parents and students in the district were taken into consideration Monday night.
