FREDERICK, MD - Firefighters pulled a wheel-chair bound senior citizen out of a house fire Sunday afternoon in Frederick County.
When paramedics arrived on the scene, the man's wife was outside her burning home crying out for them to save her husband.
The 81-year-old man, confined to a wheelchair, was trapped in his basement when the fire broke out Sunday afternoon.
Fire rescue workers quickly responded to the scene on the 5000 block of Old National Pike just after 1:00 p.m. That road was blocked off for hours Saturday afternoon as firefighters put out the fire and aired out the smoke from the house.
The man was by himself in his home with just his dog.
When first responders arrived they were told someone was trapped inside. They battled heavy smoke and carried the homeowner out. Paramedics were in and out of the home in less than 5 minutes.
Seth Edwards, a Frederick County paramedic, said, "There was heavy smoke conditions on the first level, the first floor. Zero visibility, and we were fortunate the homeowner, the man present, called out as we were searching for him to help us find him quicker."
The rescued homeowner did breathe in a lot of smoke, but he is expected to be just fine.
There is no word yet on the cause of the fire. Read more atyour4state.com.
