Family Raises Awareness After Toddler Chokes on Popcorn
After a family lost their toddler from choking on a piece of popcorn, they decided to raise awareness Sunday to prevent another family from experiencing the same tragedy.
The Brush family is holding a benefit at the I-TOO hall until midnight for their 2-year-old daughter Shannon.
She died in early October from choking on a piece of popcorn.
The problem escalated when Shannon's mother Andrea called 9-1-1 with her cell phone.
The family lives in Knox County, but the cell tower led the dispatcher to believe they were in Fulton County.
That's why Andrea is urging the community to call 9-1-1 with a landline if possible during emergencies.
Andrea describes her frustration with not being able to get the dispatcher she needed right away.
Shannon's Mother Andrea Brush says, "It just seemed like it was forever. But they had to call different people. It wasn't like . . .BOOM this is where you're at."
The Brush family didn't have medical insurance at the time of the tragedy.
Money raised at the benefit will go toward Shannon's funeral and medical costs.
