BELLE GLADE, Fla. - WPBF.com
Despite a fierce rivalry, camaraderie reigned at this weekend's Muck Bowl as the Glades Central and Pahokee high schools battled for bragging rights.
On Saturday, the two teams left it all on the field in one of the fiercest football games south Florida has seen all year.
The game stood out for another reason. This year, fans on both sides of the field said they wanted to compete in a spirit of camaraderie in the hopes of ending violence in the Glades.
Last year, Pahokee's star player Norman "Pooh" Griffith, was shot and killed outside a homecoming dance in Belle Glade.
"We come together even though we he have our differences," one fan said. "We may fight, but football brings everybody together."
Officials hired extra security at Glades Central High to make sure the game went off without a hitch.
Glades Central beat Pahokee 47 to 21.
