MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — An Alabama legislator has drafted a bill that would stop the state's public universities from offering employee benefits to same-sex couples. Republican Rep. DuWayne Bridges of Valley says his bill is ready for the next session in January. It would prohibit public universities from receiving state funds if they offer benefits to same-sex partners. His bill is aimed at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and the University of Alabama in Huntsville, which are letting faculty and staff sign up for benefits for domestic partners of either sex. A UAB spokeswoman says many other major universities are offering the benefits, and UAB needs to do it to compete. ©2009 Associated Press. All rights reserved.
