When the first fire engine arrived, flames and smoke could be seen coming from the third floor of the 20-unit building. The building was quickly evacuated and fire crews went to work trying to get the blaze under control.

The apartments on the third floor sustained substantial damage. The Red Cross was called in to help those families.

Fire crews from Bainbridge, Bedford Heights, Chagrin Falls and Orange assisted the Solon Fire Department.

Crews were able to contain the fire in about an hour, fire officials said.

One firefighter was injured. He suffered burns to his hands and wrists while fighting the fire and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
