JACKSON, Miss. - WAPT.com
A major Jackson nightclub re-opened on Friday and its owners said they hope to bring a few more jobs to the city.
With more than 17,000-square-feet, the new owners of Mardi Gras on State Street have a lot of space to fill. On Friday, the club had a quiet grand opening with a happy hour in its jazz bar.
Mardi Gras had previously opened only for special events. Last month, three partners bought the venue. While they wouldn't divulge how much they paid for the club, an online real estate listing appraised the place at $2 million. The listing also said the owner was willing to let the club go at $1.5 million.
General Manager Aubrey Norman said the trying economy times means that many people are looking for a place to forget their worries. She said that's what Mardi Gras hopes to offer customers.
"In a time like this, we need a distraction," she said. "We are all the time trying to find laughter by doing something besides worrying about what's going to happen tomorrow."
The bar features a renovated bar and dance area. A restaurant is also scheduled to open in January. Norman said they are looking for people to fill many positions.
"We are looking for cocktail hostesses and bartenders," she said. "We are creating a new atmosphere and creating job opportunities in the state of Mississippi."
Owners said business is already strong. A fundraiser for the Steve McNair Foundation will be held at the club on Monday night as well as a model search. In addition, many businesses have started booking their Christmas parties at Mardi Gras.
Those interested in applying for a job at Mardi Gras should come to the club on State Street during the week between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Applicants must be 18 years old or older to apply and be certified to sell alcohol.
