31 year old Angela Calvert is being called a hero for her grace under pressure during Thursday morning's school bus crash in London.
The accident happened around 8:30 as the Laurel County school bus driver was transporting 12 fifth grade choir students from Hunter Hills Elementary School to First Baptist Church in London. Calvert says they were about three miles from the church when she saw an SUV, driven by 48 year old Jeffrey House, in the opposite lane heading toward the bus.
Calvert says House appeared unresponsive behind the wheel adding, "I just kept thinking if I honk my horn he'll straighten up and jerk the wheel. But I honked my horn and he didn't jerk the wheel and had no response...and he just came straight into me." Calvert also talked about her decision to remain on the road, allowing House to hit the bus, rather than driving off the road into a nearby ditch. "I knew if I went into the ditch, the bus would tip over and there would certainly be injuries," Calvert remembers.
Calvert and ten students were taken to local hospitals to be examined, but no one required medical treatment. House was flown to UK hospital with serious injuries.
Police say House was driving on a suspended license at the time of the crash and will face criminal charges
