After four fire fatalities in Duluth last year, the fire department responded with a free program to make homes safer.

Deputy Fire Marshal Marnie Grondahl said none of the homes with fatalities had smoke alarms. So, last year the fire department applied for a grant to make sure all Duluthians have working smoke alarms in their home.

"A working smoke alarm will double your changes of survival in a fire," Grondahl said. "A lot of people think they'll wake up if they smell smoke but the toxins in the smoke, all the chemicals, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, hydrogen cyanide, they deaden your senses."

The fire department has given away about 732 smoke alarms and has 700 more to give away.

If you'd like your own smoke alarm you can call the Duluth fire department at 218-723-3215. Duluth firefighters will help install the smoke alarm.
