Hy-Vee Food Stores announced Friday it's donating a truckload of breakfast cereal to a Des Moines food bank.
Hy-Vee officials said 35 pallets, 847 cases, more than 10,000 individual boxes of cereal will go to the Des Moines Area Religious Council’s Emergency Food Pantry.
The cereal was purchased with funds from Hy-Vee’s seventh annual Colossal Cookie Sale held in September. Hy-Vee sold fresh bakery cookies for 10 cents each, with a penny from each cookie sold going to the Emergency Food Pantry fund.
More than 1.1 million cookies were sold, generating $11,000.
Food pantry officials said they have seen a 60 percent increase in requests for assistance because of the tough economy.
The truckload of cereal will be delivered on Nov. 17.
