DES MOINES, Iowa - THEIOWACHANNEL.com
It's starting to look and sound a lot like Christmas in Des Moines on Friday.
The Salvation Army kicked off its annual Red Kettle campaign on Friday.
Officials said the first donation was a $500 check from a veteran in honor of all World War II veterans.
Bell ringers will be out across the Des Moines metro area and are hoping to fill the red kettles with your paper money and spare change.
Officials said the need for Salvation Army services has increased about 20 percent so far this year.
"Last year, we helped 10,235 individuals in the Des Moines area. So if that holds true, we'll probably be well over 12,000 individuals this year at Christmastime," said Major David Corliss, with the Salvation Army.
The bell ringers will be out through Christmas Eve.
Officials said they still need bell-ringing volunteers to help with the effort. If you're interested, go to ringbells.org or call the Salvation Army at 515-282-3599.
Sounds Like Christmas
If you want to get in the holiday spirit, here's another way you can do it.
You can now listen to holiday music 24 hours a day on the radio.
LITE 104.1 started playing continuous holiday music at noon on Friday. The holiday music will continue through Christmas day.
