City police are investigating a collision in which a vehicle hit an east Baltimore bus shelter, injuring four people waiting inside.

City fire officials said that shortly before 10 a.m. Friday, four people were standing in a bus shelter on Fayette Street near Highland Avenue when an SUV going westbound on Fayette lost control, went up on the sidewalk and hit the bus shelter.

Officials said the driver swerved to avoid another car and skidded due to the wet street.

Fire Department spokesman Kevin Cartwright said the people in the shelter tried to scatter but were hit. The driver narrowly missed hitting a telephone pole after he hit the shelter, Cartwright said.

Two of the victims were taken to Bayview Medical Center and the other two were taken to Johns Hopkins Hospital, all with injuries that weren't considered life-threatening.

The driver of the SUV refused treatment at the scene, Cartwright said.

Officials are still investigating and said the weather may have contributed to the crash.
