We're still over a month away from Christmas, but you'll soon be getting a gift in the mail from the county assessor's office.

This week and next, County Assessor Joshua Wilson is sending out updated home assessments on every parcel in Washoe County. The majority of homeowners will see significant decreases in their property value, which in turn will lead to lower property taxes come July.

"We're going through a full evaluation process of the entire county right now based on the current real estate trends and so I am expecting to see a majority of all properties in Washoe County to see some sort of reduction in value," Wilson said.

Due to the wild ups and downs in the real estate market over the past five years, assessments will be done on an annual basis, Wilson said. Prior to his administration, assessments were done every five years.

Once you receive your assessment in the mail, you have the opportunity to appeal the valuation if you think it is still too high. However, before beginning the lengthy appeal process Wilson is encouraging residents to contact his office first with any questions on the assessment.

The number to call is 328-2233. If you still decide to file an appeal after that, the filing deadline is January 15, 2010.
