OMAHA, Neb. - KETV.com
A local mother of triplets has ditched disposal diapers and gone with cloth, encouraging other mothers to do the same.
Andrea Wright has been busy with her daughters for two years. The routine is eating, naps and changing diapers, Wright said.
Day after day, it produced staggering numbers of consumerism and waste. "Twenty-five to 30 diapers a day," she said.
But those stats pale in comparison to national numbers given by the Clean Air Council: parents throw away 570 diapers each second, and each diaper takes 300 years to break down in a landfill.
As part of that equation, not only was Wright spending a lot of money, but she was also doing a lot of damage to the environment.
"Think of all the diapers I've thrown away," she said.
She switched to cloth and found that they're not as inconvenient as she thought.
"If you're folding correctly, there's no leaks. We haven't had any leaks," she said.
It spurred her new business --
Andrea's Cloth Diaper Service.
She provides the diapers and does the laundering.
"All they have to do is use the cloth and the rest is up to me," Wright said.
At $16 per week, it's an affordable alternative to disposables, she said.
She has saved hundreds of dollars and many trips to the store.
