Police say the driver who crossed the center line and hit a Laurel County school bus Thursday morning was released from the Laurel County Detention Center in February following a DUI arrest and was driving on a suspended license.
Ten students were taken to hospitals along with two adults after the accident, which happened at about 8:30 a.m. on Sublimity School Road and KY 1006. Police say the driver of an SUV, Jeffrey House, 48, crossed the center line and hit the bus, which was carrying 12 students and two adults from Hunter Hills Elementary who were en route to a field trip.
Police say eight students were taken to Saint Joseph's Hospital London from the scene, and two others were taken to a Southeast Baptist Hospital in Corbin after they complained of injuries after they had been taken to school.
The school bus was driven by Angela M. Calvert, 31, of London. She also suffered minor injuries.
House was flown to UK Hospital with what police said were life-threatening injuries. There was no word on his condition Thursday afternoon.
Police say that House failed to take court-ordered DUI classes following his release in February.
There is no word yet on what charges, if any, House will face in the bus crash.
