Glaswegians vote in post expenses-scandal election

updated 11:30 a.m. ET Nov. 16, 2009

LONDON - People in the Scottish city of Glasgow are voting in a special parliamentary election triggered by a scandal over lawmakers' expenses.

Voters are electing a replacement for Michael Martin, the former House of Commons speaker who was forced out of his post over his handling of the furor over legislators' lavish taxpayer-funded expenses. He also stepped down as a legislator.

The poll in the Glasgow North east constituency also is a test for Prime Minister Gordon Brown's flagging Labour government, which faces a national election next year. Glasgow is a Labour stronghold and the party is expected to hold on to the seat despite a challenge from the Scottish Nationalist Party.
