The Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Highland Park was dedicated in 1996. The theme of this memorial is to educate, to commemorate, and to heal. It is one of the largest and most elaborate memorials in the nation outside Washington, D.C.
It took a decade of hard work of countless volunteers. Some gave of their time while others gave money.
The memorial is dedicated to the 280 servicemen from our area who gave their lives in defense of their country.
Twelve were missing in action when the memorial was dedicated but the remains of four soldiers have since been located and repatriated.
The average age of the young men whose names are listed at the memorial in Rochester was 19.
One was a Medal of Honor winner - Cpl. William t. Perkins, Jr. of Rochester.
