DETROIT - A candlelight vigil took place Wednesday night in Detroit for a 3-year-old girl who police said was beaten to death in South Carolina.

Serenity Richardson's mother, Ieshia Richardson, took the girl to visit a friend in Summerville, S.C. , while she was in the process of moving.

"My baby went down there in one piece, happy, no scars, no nothing," Richardson said. "They sent her back to me in a box."

Erica Mae Butts, 23, the woman who was caring for the girl, was arraigned last week on a homicide by child abuse charge.

"Please know that it's not the weirdo down the street or the weird teacher or that uncle that you can't stand. It might just be your best friend," Richardson said.

Anyone interested in donating to the Serenity Richardson Memorial Fund can do so at any Bank of America branch.
