DELRAY BEACH, Fla. - WPBF.com
Police have arrested a man in connection with Monday night's carjacking of an elderly couple, one of whom was shot.
Shamsiddin Saleem was arrested early Wednesday morning on carjacking and second-degree attempted murder charges.
Delray Beach police said Saleem admitted to following 82-year-old Russell Keegan and 90-year-old Gertrude Stern to their Delray Beach condominium on Boxwood Drive, but he also claimed he wasn't alone.
Officer Jeff Messer said Saleem was "clearly a predator."
"They preyed on someone that they knew they could dominate, someone they knew they could totally control," Messer said. "The guy we arrested is 22 years old. The people he's taking down are 82 and 90. I mean, they are virtually defenseless against a young, strong kid like this."
Police said Keegan identified Saleem as the man who robbed and shot him.
Keegan was shot in the neck and Stern suffered a broken hip. Both were recovering Wednesday at Delray Medical Center.
Police were checking fingerprints from the stolen car that was later found abandoned and said more arrests could be made.
