Local events to celebrate Veteran's Day

Wednesday is Veteran's Day, a time to honor those who have given so much of themselves to the United States.

Several Central Coast cities have events planned on this holiday, here are a few:

San Luis Obispo - The American Red Cross is teams up with Michael's for "Touch of Home." Participants can make holiday cards that will eventually be sent to troops overseas. 11:00a.m. - 4:00p.m. at the Michael's store in the Marigold Shopping Center in San Luis Obispo.

San Luis Obispo - The San Luis Obispo Elks Lodge holds its annual Veteran's Day dinner to honor local men and women at Camp San Luis Obispo and local soldiers who have died in Iraq and Afghanistan. Dinner begins at 5:00p.m. at the Elks Lodge.

San Luis Obispo - Members of the Cuesta College Student Veteran's Association plan to place 2,000 small flags on the lawn between the 3200 building and the Student Center on the San Luis Obispo campus.

San Luis Obispo - The Central Coast Veteran's Museum will be open on Veteran's Day, from 9:00a.m. to 4:00p.m. to honor all veterans. Refreshments will be served.

Los Osos - Local resident Greg Shearer is getting help from Sea Pines Golf Resort for the first "Thank A Vet" Golf and Poker Tournament. All proceeds go toward keeping the local transit "Veteran's Express" on the road.

Atascadero - The Atascadero Veterans Memorial Foundation and the Atascadero VFW Post 2814 will hold a ceremony to honor veterans. It begins at 11:00 a.m. At the "Faces of Freedom" Veterans memorial, at the intersection of Highway 41 and Portola Rd.

Atascadero - Atascadero Elks Lodge is hosting a veterans recognition dinner. A social hour begins at 5:30p.m., dinner begins at 6:00p.m. A program includes recognition of Veterans and an awards ceremony.

Guadalupe - The Guadalupe American Legion is hosting a guest speaker at 10:00a.m. The speaker is from Vandenberg Air Force Base. They will also honor local men and women service members who died in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Santa Maria - A parade and veterans lunch will be held at the Veteran's Memorial Community Center on E. Pine St. The fun begins at 10:30a.m.

Santa Barbara - The Santa Barbara Trust for Historic Preservation hosts a ceremony at El Presidio de Santa Barbara State Historic Park at 10:30a.m. The event includes a prayer, wreath ceremony, the playing of taps and a cannon and musket firing.
